SMIDLER RESIDENCE 

The project is a home addition located in Clairemont Mesa, San Diego CA. One of the main challenges was to create a second story with the minimum visual impact to the street as well as the backyard. Keeping the character of the existing neighborhood was important, and at the same time keeping a distinction of the existing from the new was a goal of the design team. The resulting shape allows for a vaulted ceiling in the master bedroom as well as a roof terrace with views to the San Diego Bay. The roof is designed to collect rainwater into a storage tank for the irrigation of an organic garden located in the backyard. 

El proyecto es una ampliación de vivienda ubicada en Clairemont Mesa, San Diego CA. Uno de los principales desafíos fue crear un segundo piso con el mínimo impacto visual tanto hacia la calle como hacia el patio trasero. Mantener el carácter del vecindario era importante y, al mismo tiempo, mantener la distinción entre lo existente y lo nuevo era un objetivo del equipo de diseño. La forma resultante permite un techo abovedado en el dormitorio principal, así como una terraza en la azotea con vistas a la Bahía de San Diego. El techo está diseñado para recoger el agua de lluvia en un tanque de almacenamiento para el riego de un huerto orgánico ubicado en el patio trasero.
